Storyboarding and 2D Animation Reel

Posted on November 15, 2013 1 Comments

This is my Storyboarding and 2D Animation demo reel. I've put a lot of time and effort into this reel. It shows my storyboarding background and some of my 2D animation skills. The majority of my stories have some kind of humorous twist to them, and this reel is a pretty good example of that.

The above reel incorporates several storyboard projects that I have done over the past few years and their final versions; whether it's full animation or a digitally painted animatic. "Gone Hunting" was a group musical project for a production team at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. I was given the task to create the initial storyboards and scene layouts, as well as the 2D animation for all of the animals throughout the 3 minute piece. It used both hand-drawn animation as well as Flash-based animation, then composited with some 3D elements in AfterEffects. Because of my musical background, I was also asked to compose the song along with perform the guitar and vocal parts, which unfortunately is not included in the reel. However, the music in the reel is the main guitar tracks from the soundtrack from "Gone Hunting".

The fully animated piece, "Outside", shows the excitement of being a dog and how that can affect his owner's attitude. Stewart Reeder is a depressed, over-worked, single man that comes home to his best friend every day. His best friend being a dog, Chewie, gives him the love and affection that keeps Stewart going from day to day. Unfortunately, this day is a little different for both Stewart and Chewie. Chewie's excitement when his owner returns home goes a little above and beyond the previous days...

"Madelaine and The Frog" is loosely based off of the fairytale story, "The Princess and the Frog". It has a slight twist at the end of the story when Madelaine is believed to have kissed the frog. However, let's just say it ends up at a dinner table with the two of them, but the frog is not a guest.

"Computer Mice" is actually based off of a short poem by Todd-Michael St. Pierre. It involves a successful graphic designer and his mis-adventures with a helpful, computer-savvy, mouse couple. He is forced to change over his computer setup from a PC to a Mac, however the mice don't know that. To sum it up, getting a Mac can sometimes be a game of cat and mouse...
